Cava leads, the smoothie brands are surging, and Sweetgreen is in a reset year. The Savor Intelligence ranking shows healthy is a reason to visit, not a reason to charge more.
The bottom line: The top 5 better-for-you restaurant brands of 2026, per Savor Intelligence, are Cava, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Smoothie King, Playa Bowls and Sweetgreen. The winners pair a health halo with value, speed and a broad menu. Premium single-category salad concepts are losing ground to price resistance and food-safety sensitivity.
The segment is splitting in two
When I coined "fast casual," the idea was simple: better food, delivered fast, at a price people would come back for. Better-for-you is getting a lesson in that right now.
On one side are brands that treat "healthy" as a reason to visit. Cava, Tropical Smoothie and Smoothie King are growing traffic and units. On the other side are premium salad concepts asking guests to pay more for the halo. Sweetgreen's negative comps show the pressure, and Salad and Go's August 2026 shutdown of all 70 units shows how fast it can go wrong.
The Savor Intel Top 5
Rankings are provisional Savor Intel scores as of Nov. 2, 2026.
1. Cava: score 89.4
Key stats: Same-restaurant sales up 9.0% in Q2 2026, with traffic up 5.3%. Average unit volume of $3.1M.
Why: It's the segment's clear leader on every operating metric. Traffic, not just price, is driving comps, and it passed 500 restaurants in September.
2. Tropical Smoothie Cafe: score 84.0
Key stats: $1.6B+ in system sales and about 1,800 cafes projected by year-end 2026.
Why: It's the biggest system in the segment, and its food menu widens dayparts well beyond smoothies. Loyalty reached 13M members.
3. Smoothie King: score 75.0
Key stats: Same-store sales up 9% in July 2026. 1,250+ units.
Why: It's the sharpest turnaround in the segment. New Chicken Flatbreads helped deliver positive comps every month in 2026.
4. Playa Bowls: score 69.0
Key stats: 400+ locations and 64 openings planned for 2026.
Why: It's the fastest-scaling bowl brand, moving into Sunbelt markets like Texas and Florida and launching in Canada.
5. Sweetgreen: score 53.0
Key stats: Same-store sales down 6.2% in Q2 2026. 66% digital sales.
Why: It stays in the top 5 on brand strength and the industry's most advanced kitchen automation, not on current momentum. Q3 results are due Nov. 5.
What's lifting the segment
Functional eating. Protein, fiber and "functional" trends are pulling guests toward bowls, smoothies and Mediterranean.
Franchise capital. Heal Wellness signed a 150-unit Texas deal on Nov. 2, taking its pipeline to 460 units. Tropical Smoothie has 900+ signed commitments.
Food works. Smoothie brands that added real food are widening dayparts and lifting tickets.
What's holding it back
Price fatigue. A $15+ salad now competes with value meals as consumers trade down.
Pipelines are not openings. Signed agreements convert slowly, and over-expansion is what sank Salad and Go.
